Let’s go ahead and start off by first saying that all the major U.S. banks, they all accept ITIN in place of SSN if you don’t have one. So let me just start by saying that.

How To Open a Bank Account In the US Without an SSN

We’re only targeting or we’re talking about. U.S. banks here we’re not talking about virtual online banks, whatever we’re talking about actual U.S. Banks like the big four, for example.

• Wells Fargo
• Citibank
• America
• Chase, etc.

All Of them accept the ITIN in place of SSN. So we know that, that’s give us the first answer to this question.

The second thing we want to point out is that when it comes to personal accounts, we know a lot of people ask us a lot like, OK, open up a personal bank account.

And the general rule of thumb is when it comes to personal U.S. personal bank accounts, again, we’re talking about these major banks and not these online ones. The rule of thumb is you have to come to the U.S. in person to open an account.

Can I Open Account Without Social Security Number?

If you don’t have SSN and ITIN can substitute for that and then if you have a U.S. business bank account, it’s a little bit different, generally speaking for most of the banks.

Yes, you need your business documents like your operating agreement articles or certificate or specific information or articles of organization you EIN and ITIN.

And you generally need all those things to open up the business bank account.

Now, some U.S. banks to open the business bank account, they won’t require the ITIN initially to open the account.

But as we’ve said in other articles, what ends up happening that we see a lot is in time the bank will then contact the client and let them know.

We do request you to provide us your individual tax identification number or Social Security Number. If you do not provide that in a timely fashion, they do reserve the right to close your account at their discretion, which we’ve seen plenty of times.

So although you can get away with it, initially without the ITIN sometimes, which is the business account down the line, you’re going to run that issue of you’re going to have to venture at some point provided. So we always tell all our clients that ITIN is the glue to everything for the for the Non-U.S. Citizens.

Open Bank Account Online With ITIN Number

Use your ITIN. Now, some people who are US resident aliens for tax purposes or just US resident aliens in general, because they passed substantial presence to us and they don’t have an ITIN. But you’ll come to find they have many accounts sometimes banks like Bank of America, etc.
