Are you afraid of what ITIN numbers expire in 2020? Let’s talk about it, then.
Is your ITIN expired?
Is it still valid?
What’s the scenario?
What’s the situation?
How to Check Your ITIN
There are three different bullet points to look at to determine whether your ITIN is valid, about to expire, or expired.
What ITIN Numbers Expired In 2018
The IRS looks at 2 middle digits within the entire 9-digit number.
An ITIN always starts off with three digits, then goes a dash along with two numbers, and finally another dash and four numbers.
If your middle two digits are anywhere between 70 and 82, your ITIN already expired at the end of 2018.
So, if you haven’t made attempts to get that renewed, here’s how to.
What ITIN Numbers Expired In 2019
Now, if you have not used your ITIN on a US federal tax return…
Or you weren’t claimed on someone else’s US federal tax return in either 2016, 2017, or 2018, then your ITIN expired on December 31st, 2019.
So if you haven’t gotten it renewed, you’re going to have to go ahead and get that started as well, too.
What ITIN Numbers Expire In 2020
If the two middle digits of your ITIN number are either 83, 84, 85, 86, or 87, then your ITIN will be expiring at the end of this year in 2020.
Don’t wait for the IRS to send you a notification letter because Lord knows it’s won’t happen, especially with everything going on.
Take the initiative.
Go ahead and get started.
Know that your ITIN will be expiring so plan accordingly.
If you have to get your ITIN renewed, go ahead and get that done.

If you have a tax reporting requirement…
If you have taxable income and your ITIN’s expiring…
Then you can file an ITIN Renewal Application without having a tax return attached.
But with COVID, ITIN processes severely delay.
So we do not recommend people renewing their ITINs without their tax term attached to it.
Instead, file them together.
That will speed up the process and reduce the risk of getting rejected.
That’s what we tell all of our clients.
