Required ITIN Documents
Are you curious to know about what documents required to get an ITIN?
So basically what documents you need to go with your ITIN application to the IRS, so you can successfully get your ITIN issued. This part is probably the hardest part of the process.
We know that most people, when it comes to applying for an ITIN, they literally just think it’s just one piece of paper and that’s pretty much it. And any monkey can do it. And it’s so simple.
So why do people have services where they help you for it when it looks so easy?
And they couldn’t be more further from the truth. I mean, most of our clients are people who have tried to apply on their own and they’ve gotten rejected. So obviously there is some difficulty to it, or there’s some confusion going on.

Types Of Documentation For The ITIN Application
So in terms of the documentation for the ITIN application, there are two sets of documentation requirements that you have to have in order for your file to be deemed complete so that we can legally file with the IRS to help you get your ITIN.
The first of which is your identification documentation. That’s generally satisfied with your passport. A valid passport. It cannot be expired.
If you cannot provide a passport, then there is a list of acceptable, alternate identification documentation that the IRS accepts in place of the passport. And it can be birth certificates, US visa, national identification cards, foreign driver’s licenses.
And the IRS just make it a note that if you don’t provide a passport to satisfy this requirement, then you have to use two of the other alternate.
- You have to use two identification documents on the alternate list in place of the passport. So just keep that in mind.
- And then the second documentation required for the ITIN application is the supporting documentation requirement. Now, traditionally, the supporting documentation requirement for the ITIN application, it’s satisfied with an income tax return form.

You need to provide 2 sets of documents to get your ITIN:
1. Identification Document (Typically a Passport)

This requirement is generally satisfied with a valid passport (from any country in the world).
A passport is the only stand-alone document that can be used to satisfy the identification documentation requirement for the ITIN application.
If you’re unable to provide a passport, then you must submit a combination of at least 2 other unexpired documents from the official IRS List of Identification Documents shown below to use instead for their ITIN application.
With the exception of children under 14 years of age (under age 18 if student), at least 1 of the 2 documents submitted must contain a recent photograph.

Note: In the case of dependents for tax returns, the passport must have a stamped date of entry into the U.S. to be a stand-alone document, unless the applicant is from Canada, Mexico, or is a dependent of US military personnel stationed overseas.
If a passport without a date of entry submitted for a dependent, then additional documents proving the dependents U.S. residency must also be provided such as US medical or school records.
2. Supporting Documents

Traditionally, this requirement for the ITIN application is satisfied by a U.S. Federal Income Tax Return (IRS Form 1040/1040NR).
However, if you’re not able to provide a U.S. Federal Income Tax Return, then there are 5 “Exception Categories” you could possibly qualify for in order for you to get your ITIN.
If you qualify for one of these 5 “Exception Categories,” then based on the category you qualify for, you can use the appropriate documentation from this category instead of a U.S. Federal Income Tax Return to satisfy your supporting documentation requirement.
So those are the documentation requirements for the ITIN application. Now the documentation requirements also have their own formalities as well, too and format procedures I guess you could say.
Sometimes people can have the right documents, but they’re not formatted correctly. And then that can cause an application and get rejected, or they just simply use the wrong.
Sometimes people will provide documentation that doesn’t. It’s not a tax return. It doesn’t qualify for any of the exception categories.
And it’s just not documentation that will suffice for the ITIN application. Sometimes people use wrong documentation for the wrong exception category.
There’s so many different things that can go wrong in this portion of the process where it can cause a rejection on the ITIN application. And this is where I have to stress having an IRS certifying acceptance agents like ourselves to help you get through this process correctly.
Step by step and to make sure that your ITIN application’s fill out correctly. To make sure that you’re identification certified. To make sure that your supporting documentation is correct and corresponding to which exception category you’re using, or if you’re doing tax return.
Is your tax return the right status? The applicants being claimed. If they’re being claimed as a dependent, are the right documentations provided for that dependent such as a proof.
Like we said before, there’s so many different things we can get into in terms of what can cause a rejection during this portion of the process, which is the documentation requirements. So it’s really important too If you’re trying to do it on your own, we would recommend going with an IRS certifying acceptance agency instead. Honestly, it would be the best decision you ever made.
Documentation for Obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
These are the documentation requirements for the ITIN application. So it’s not just a W7 IRS ITIN form.
That is one component of it, but there are obviously different requirements as well for the application. And people have also misunderstood that you can just simply turn that W7 form and that’s it.
No, these documentation requirements have to go with the ITIN application to the IRS. If they are not included and they’re not properly formatted, and it’s not the correct documentation for the applicant’s case, then the application will get rejected.
And the IRS does not care who these applications come from. They have no problem rejecting an application if it’s not done correctly.
Regardless of whether you had it completed by a CPA or an attorney or from an IRS tax assistance center itself, they do not care. If it’s done incorrectly, they will reject it.
So you really got to make sure that you take your time to get these in correctly. And I recommend working with an IRS certifying acceptance agent, because it will really save you some time in that regard.
And that is why….
